The impact of this story is that 80 years ago someone was writing about a global pandemic and its ultimate impact on people. Ish represents the reader, someone who didn’t have to watch people die, watch the news, feel hopeless and defeated.
This is very much in keeping with the Ozymandias poem
Those he meets represent the ways in which people can cope with these enormous losses. The fragility of man and the bravado of humanity in its achievements.
